You, yes you reading this right now, are bisexual…

This title is not directed at a single person, it is actually directed at every human living today, every human who has ever lived, and every human who will ever live…

This is an idea I have had in my mind for years, and I’ve never really thought it fully through before, so in part this post is to allow me to think through it more fully than I have before.

Almost every animal you can think of (including humans) are sexual animals. This has many purposes from an evolutionary perspective including reproduction, dominance, pleasure, and more. A 1999 review by researcher Bruce Bagemihl shows that homosexual behavior, has been observed in close to 1500 species, ranging from primates to gut worms, and is well documented for 500 of them.[2][3]  This should help to show that sexuality is not only about reproduction, and that homosexuality is not is not only about defying god or whatever random bullshit some stone age mythology would have you believe.

Essentially my idea is that sexuality is much more of a sliding scale than a set of hard and fast points. There is no “straight”, there is no “gay”, there is only sexuality. If you think of the straightest person you know or the gayest person you know (or feel free to use yourself for one of the two examples if you think it fits) you may say to yourself that they are 100% straight or 100% gay, but I’d argue that they are not straight or gay, but various positions along a sliding scale.

Now I realize that this is a simple enough concept that obviously I would not be the first to think of it, although when I’ve mentioned it to friends in the past they found it interesting but had not thought of it that way themselves.

In fact to prove to myself that this idea is not unique to me, I found a number of quotes on this same idea, many of whoich obviously pre-date me based on the fact that they were made by people who died before I was born.

“All human beings are bisexual – & their libido is distributed between objects of both sexes, either in a manifest or a latent form.” – Freud

“Humans do not fall exclusively into heterosexual or homosexual classifications but somewhere in between.” – Kinsey

“Males do not represent two discrete populations, heterosexual and homosexual. The world is not to be divided into sheep and goats. Not all things are black nor all things white. It is a fundamental of taxonomy that nature rarely deals with discrete categories. Only the human mind invents categories and tries to force facts into separated pigeon-holes. The living world is a continuum in each and every one of its aspects. The sooner we learn this concerning human sexual behavior, the sooner we shall reach a sound understanding of the realities of sex.” – Kinsey

“Sex is a continuum. You go through different phases along life’s way … and if you don’t, you’ve been sort of cheated… the reason no one has yet been able to come up with a good word to describe the homosexualist (sometimes known as gay, fag, queer, etc.) is because he does not exist. The human race is divided into male and female. Many human beings enjoy the sexual relations with their own sex, many don’t; many respond to both. The plurality is the fact of our nature and not worth fretting about.” – Gore Vidal

“The time has come, I think, when we must recognize bisexuality as a normal form of human behavior. . . we shall not really succeed in discarding the straitjacket of our cultural beliefs about sexual choice if we fail to come to terms with the well-documented, normal human capacity to love members of both sexes.” – Margaret Mead

“To deny it implies that it’s wrong.” – Alan Cumming

“Homosexuality was invented by a straight world dealing with its own bisexuality.” – Kate Millett, Flying

“A homosexual or bisexual individual may experience conflict with a homophobic society; however, such conflict is not a symptom of dysfunction in the individual. The APA Board recognized that a significant portion of homosexual and bisexual people were clearly satisfied with their sexual orientation and showed no signs of psychopathology.” – Fact Sheet, Homosexual and Bisexual Issues, American Psychiatric Association.

“All great novels, all true novels, are bisexual.” – Milan Kundera

“Virginia Woolf said that writers must be androgynous. I’ll go a step further. You must be bisexual.” – Rita Mae Brown

“The dilemma of traditional sex research lay in the unconscious, but unquestioningly assumed division into opposing drives and hereditary factors. . . The division into heterosexuality and homosexuality, into heterosexuals and homosexuals, is also an artifact that rests on a grave error, namely, on the assumption that a fundamentally different model is necessary to explain heterosexual and homosexual behavior. The entire investigation of etiology was ideologically loaded beforehand because it separated a segment of the sexual continuum and attempted to make analyses with the help of fundamentally different concepts.” – Rolf Gindorf

“So you see, there are some very clear examples in the animal kingdom about why “gay” animals came into existence – and why we are still around and why the “gay gene” doesn’t die out. It clearly serves a purpose for the overall benefit of its specific animal group. Perhaps in some animal groups, the purpose is to control over-population, but in other groups, that doesn’t seem to be the case.” – David S.

So clearly this idea is not unique to me. But it is one that few people seem familiar with. And while to me it seems obvious that it is true, to many people it is a dangerous, even heretical idea.

You may not like it (that does not make it less true). You may think I’m trying to offend you (I’m not). You may think your “holy book” contradicts you (I could care not possibly less about your book). But it’s clear.

You are bisexual.

    FWIW,
While I am not going to approve the trackback from gay porn websites, I do appreciate that somebody associated with these sites found this article interesting and worthy of linking to.

I just feel that links back to a dozen or so different porn sites (and if it matters, I’d feel the same if it was straight porn as well) is not quite “kosher”. Hopefully you understand, and I do welcome any comments if you have any.

Well, heck Jeff, I already knew that.

My boyfriend thinks he made me straight (conquered my queerness perhaps), but I choke at calling myself het. I’m not. And neither is he. And a “sliding scale” is right on target. Nicely put.
