Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” (also Johnny Cash’s cover)

I have often posted random music here in the past, but I am hoping to make it a “regular thing” now. My idea is to post music each Monday, that is something I am listening to at the time. As somebody who’s life is inspired by music, I thought this would be a more regular way to share things that perhaps you’ve not heard before, or something that just caught me as particularly interesting recently.

I do plan to do mostly lesser known bands, or lesser known songs, but occasionally (as with this particular song) it will just be a song that I feel like sharing, no matter how well known the song or artist may be.

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Jeff Randall is a frequent volunteer for free-thought organizations, including the Center For Inquiry – DC. Having been blogging since January 2008, he decided that a community of bloggers would be an interesting new experience (or at the very least a fun way to annoy his friends into reading his posts more frequently). Since finding out about about the existence of, and then joining, the atheist/skeptic community in 2007 he has been committed to community activism, critical thinking in all aspects of life, science, reason, and a fostering a secular society.
